What is perimenopause?

the transitional phase leading up to menopause which is characterized by changing hormone levels that can lead to many common, but distressing symptoms.

While menopause is a single point in time, the perimenopause transition can last for up to 10 years, meaning that it can begin as early as age 40.

During this transitional period, your ovaries will make less estrogen. During this phase, your hormones will fluctuate. At a certain point, your ovaries will no longer make enough estrogen to trigger ovulation. At this point, you will stop getting your period and will enter menopause.
